I’m often asked a seemingly simple but frequently overlooked question during my aroma workshops: "Can I just blow out my scented candle when I'm done?"
For many, blowing out the flame is a natural reflex. However, in the context of scented candles, this is a practice we generally advise against. Today, let’s dive into the combustion principles to understand why blowing is not ideal and explore the proper techniques for extinguishing your candles.
Why You Should Avoid Blowing Out Candles
Blowing out a candle relies on airflow to cool the flame and displace oxygen. But for a scented candle, this abrupt method can cause several negative side effects:
1. Soot Production and Mess
When a flame is suddenly hit by a strong puff of air, the temperature around it drops rapidly. This prevents the vaporized wax from burning completely, resulting in unburned carbon particles—commonly known as soot. This black smoke will stain the inside of your glass vessel, making it look dirty, and it can also compromise the air quality in your room, ruining the relaxing atmosphere you just created.
2. Disrupting the Wick
The force of your breath can easily bend the wick or cause the charred tip to flop into the wax pool. A bent wick leads to uneven burning, an excessively large flame, or excessive smoking the next time you light the candle.
3. Risk of Wax Splatter
Blowing hard can agitate the liquid wax pool, causing hot wax to splash out of the vessel. This not only creates a mess on your furniture but also poses a burn risk to your skin.
The Right Way to Extinguish Your Candle
So, what is the professional alternative? In aromatherapy and proper candle care, we recommend two primary methods:
Method 1: Using a Snuffer (Smothering)
This is the most straightforward approach. Place a metal candle snuffer over the flame to cut off the oxygen supply. The flame will extinguish instantly without producing soot or disturbing the wick. Tip: lift the snuffer slightly for a few seconds before removing it completely to let any residual smoke escape, preventing a trapped, smoky odor inside the jar.
Method 2: Using a Wick Dipper (Submerging)
This is the favorite method among seasoned candle lovers. Use the hooked end of a wick dipper to gently push the burning wick into the liquid wax pool. The flame goes out immediately.
The brilliance of this technique lies in the details: the charred tip of the wick is submerged in the wax, which cuts off oxygen and prevents the residual heat from baking the wick and creating a burnt smell. It also acts as a "hidden trim." The next time you light the candle, simply pull the wick upright and snip off the wax-coated charred tip. This keeps your wick in optimal condition for a clean burn.
The Crucial Final Step: Centering and Trimming
Regardless of the method you choose, the post-extinguishing care is vital. While the wax is still liquid, use your dipper or tweezers to straighten the wick, ensuring it stands perfectly vertical in the center of the vessel. If there is any charred debris floating in the wax, fish it out.
When we test the burn performance of our candles at the NOLO Base studio, we pay close attention to the wick's condition after extinguishing, because every proper extinguishing sets the stage for a perfect next burn.
A scented candle is more than just a source of fragrance; it is a lifestyle ritual that deserves a gentle touch. Swap the habit of blowing with a more scientific and elegant approach, and you will be rewarded with a better burning experience.
